Since his VizzTone debut a few years ago, the multi-talented piano player Ben Levin has been making the rounds, playing in all sorts of configurations from making a record with Lil' Jimmy Reed to touring with the Nick Moss Band. He’s most recently united with singing sensation Stella Heath for a cool jazz-blues session, and today VizzTone Label Group releases a four-song digital EP called Waiting Just For You to celebrate.

Ben and Stella met in March 2020, and while both artists were stuck at home during the early stages of the pandemic, they were inspired to collaborate and work on classic R&B duets from the 1950s. They recorded four duets virtually and the last one, “I’m Waiting Just For You” (a cover from a Lucky Millinder big band recording on the Cincinnati-based label King Records), was such a hit with Ben and Stella’s fans online that they decided to plan a show and a recording session. In April 2023, Ben and Stella finally had the opportunity to work together in person and played one sold out show in Cincinnati and spent one day in the studio. They hired legendary Cincinnati jazz musicians Art Gore on drums (who has worked with artists such as George Benson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Lonnie Liston Smith) and Jim Anderson on bass (who has worked with artists such as Art Blakey, Ernestine Anderson, Hank Crawford). They also recorded a swinging Joe Liggins/Candy Rivers duet “One Sweet Letter” and two originals. “Too Good For Me” was originally written and recorded by Ben for his 2020 album Carryout Or Delivery which he re-arranged into a duet to sing with Stella. “To Know What Love Feels Like Again” is the last original which Ben co-wrote with a friend, based in the classic tradition of torch songs.

With Stella’s background in jazz and a love for blues, and Ben’s background in blues with a love for jazz, the two met musically in the middle. “Waiting Just For You” showcases four duets in a style where blues and jazz intersect to create a beautiful, classic sound. -American Blues Scene

When two-time Blues Music Award nominee and budding music historian Ben Levin (age 23) first contacted Lil' Jimmy Reed (Leon Atkins, age 84), the two bluesmen, at very different times in their lives and careers, discovered that their musical synergy was effortless. It was soon clear to Levin that producing the capstone album of this treasured icon who epitomizes the Louisiana down-home blues style was an important contribution to recorded blues history. Lil' Jimmy Reed's powerful harmonica playing, stinging guitar, and commanding vocals are showcased in a mixture of covers and original songs written by Ben Levin, his father Aron Levin, and Lil' Jimmy.

Carryout Or Delivery (Vizztone Label Group)

Ben Levin

“Carryout or Delivery” is the third CD from 20 year old blues pianist Ben Levin. His second album “Before Me” also released on Vizztone, brought Ben’s authentic blues piano and soulful vocals to the world and paved the way for Ben’s nomination for a 2020 Blues Music Award for best album by an emerging artist. “Before Me” ended 2019 as the number 80 contemporary blues album on the Roots Music Report, measured by radio airplay. With his newest CD written and recorded during the 2020 pandemic, Ben explores the serious side effects of being cooped up with a steady diet of carryout and delivery food, but also manages to have a lot of fun and celebrate the things in life that we still have, namely love and music. On “Carryout” Ben expands his songwriting (he wrote 8 of the 12 tracks) to various shades of blues, soul, and funk while also showing that in addition to piano, he’s more than capable on the B3 and the Wurlitzer electric piano.

BEFORE ME is the second album from brilliant young blues pianist/singer/songwriter Ben Levin. Featuring performances by his musical friends and heroes Bob Margolin, Bob Corritore, and Phillip Paul (King Records drummer). Listening to this album, you start to think that Levin is the product of decades of long nights in dark clubs and smoky juke joints. He has that sound, a mature perspective that comes from totally immersing yourself in the music until it permeates the deepest recesses of your soul. The reality is that Ben is just finishing his first year of college. But, make no mistake his musical apprenticeship is over. The joy he feels for the music radiates from every track, and his skillful presentation will keep you coming back for more.

Little did I know that ten years ago, when my friend Aron Levin started bringing his son Ben over to the house for piano lessons that Ben would develop into a discerning, self-motivated force of nature. Ben has been through the mechanical stages of learning - he now lives, breathes and owns the music he plays, whether it's his own compositions or ones left to us by the greats in blues & boogie woogie. A superb vocalist displaying great nuance and nonchalance, Ben Levin has all the goods. - Ricky Nye (from liner notes)
